Background

The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) Working Group was established in 2000 as a committee of government geoscientists from jurisdictions that are part of this prolific basin.

The objectives of the WCSB Working Group are:

• To establish joint geoscience research priorities across WCSB; and
• Find ways to best cooperate to achieve these priorities.

The group is interested in geoscience research for all resources in the basin including: oil, natural gas, minerals, coal, oil sands, aggregate, building materials, water, gas from coal, and CO₂ (and sequestration thereof).

We meet formally on an annual basis and consult on an as needed basis throughout the year.  Meetings involve establishing broad basin wide research priorities, coordinating activities, and exchanging research ideas.  Partnering opportunities in areas of potential project overlap are sought by attendees.
